David Weinstein (musician)

David Weinstein (born 1954 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American keyboardist, composer and installation artist.

Life and work

Weinstein studied composition at the University of Illinois at Ben Johnston and Salvatore Martirano. In 1978 he went to New York City, where he was co-founder of the New York venue Roulette, whose productions he directed from 1978 to 1994. As a keyboardist, he moved in New York's downtown scene and was initially known primarily for his work with John Zorn, on whose productions Cobra, The Big Gundown and Spillane he participated. He also introduced their own productions. In addition, he played a long time in a duo with Shelley Hirsch, with whom he also grossed more albums. Their joint production O Little Town of East New York was honored in 1993 with the Prix Futura. In addition, he was also involved in productions by Elliott Sharp, Ned Rothenberg, Paul Dresher, Rhys Chatham and many others from Arto Lindsay to Zeena Parkins.

Weinstein also created theater pieces and installations. His multimedia collaboration with video artist Doris Vila in 2002 led to a price at Ars Electronica. Between 2004 and 2008 he was the program director of Radio WPS1.org; currently he has the same position with the Internet Radio Artonair.org.
