Dawes (lunar crater)

17.8

Dawes is an impact crater, which is located northeast of the crater Plinius in the wide strait between the Mare Serenitatis and Mare Tranquillitatis. North-east rise the slopes of Mons Argaeus. The circular crater shows a slightly flattened outline and a sharp crater rim. He has in the center a slight elevation and is slightly darker colored soil is almost entirely covered with overlapping swirl -like deposits. The majority of these deposits consists of relapsed or abgerutschtem material. The crater walls are steep and show no signs of erosion on.

Detailed studies have found apparent niches and gullies on the crater inner edge. The assumptions on the impacts of micrometeorites solve at crater rim landslides that generate a channel-like structure. Similar appearances can be observed of some craters on Mars and on the inside, where it is assumed that the same causes.

North-west of Dawes runs the moon groove Rima Dawes.
