Dean Island (Antarctica)

The Dean Island is located in the Getz Ice Shelf between the Grant Island and Siple Island, off the coast of Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica. The island is 30 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide and year-round covered with ice. The Dean island was discovered from 30 km distance on 5 February 1962 by staff of the icebreaker USS Glacier. It was (* 1925) is named after Chief Warrant Officer Samuel Lester Dean, who was an electrician on the Glacier at the time of discovery.
