Dear Reader

Dear Reader is an indie pop band from Johannesburg, South Africa. It was founded in 2006 by singer and songwriter Cherilyn MacNeil and producer and bassist Darryl Torr. Dear Reader is now a single project by Cherilyn MacNeil.

History

In August 2006, MacNeil and Torr released their first album, The Younger the South African record label Just Music. The album was published under the band name Harris Tweed. In 2008, the band changed its name to Dear Reader, as the Scottish textile company Harris Tweed objected.

2008 MacNeil and Torr recorded their first album under the name Dear Reader, entitled Replace Why with Funny. It was founded by Brent button ( Menomena, Ramona Falls) produced. Soon after, she signed a recording contract with the Berlin indie label City Slang and released their album Replace Why with Funny in February 2009. In Europe, it has also been released by City Slang in South Africa by Just Music.

2010 won Replace Why with Funny an award in the category Best English Adult Contemporary Album at the South African Music Awards.

In 2010, MacNeil and Torr parted amicably and MacNeil settled in Berlin, where she wrote songs for the next album Dear Reader Idealistic Animals. The album was recorded once again in collaboration with Brent button and various other friends and musicians in Leipzig and Portland.

Idealistic Animals was published in September 2011 in Germany and South Africa. In the rest of Europe it was released in November 2011.
