History

Background

The musical family DeBarge was born in Detroit, then moved to Grand Rapids in Michigan. 1977 founded Bernd Lichters from Hamburg, Tommy and Bobby DeBarge along with Jody Sims, Greg Williams, Phillip Ingram and Eddie Fill in Mansfield (Ohio ), the group switch and produced a demo tape for Jermaine Jackson, who discovered the group. They got a record deal with Motown, and ended up in the U.S. R & B charts quite successful hits.

The early years (1979-1981)

Bernd Lichters also discovered the vocal talents of the other family members. With the release of SMASH 1979 by source / MCA in the U.S. / Canada, first published in 1977 in Germany as ' Pall Mall Groove ' HOT ICE by Polydor, El, Mark, Randy and Bunny DeBarge moved from Michigan to Los Angeles. 1980 El DeBarge played in the office of Motown in the presence of Berry Gordy 'live' compositions of the family on the piano and sang. So they also received recording contracts with Motown and formed in 1980 to DeBarge. In 1981 their debut album The DeBarges, which, however, largely failed to meet expectations of success.

The great success (1982-1985)

After James DeBarge joined the band, was the album All This Love and its extractions Stop! Do not Tease Me, I Like It and All This Love much more successful. Especially in the U.S. R & B Charts won the songs popularity.

The follow-up album In a Special Way was able to continue the success, but the singles Time Will Reveal and Love Me in a Special Way found on the Billboard Hot 100 with little approval. In the same year DeBarge also appeared in the special television program Motown 25: on Yesterday, Today, Forever.

1985 followed by a productive tour of the International breakthrough with the album by DeBarge Rhythm of the Night. A total of four singles were released: Rhythm of the Night, Who's Holding Donna Now, You Wear It Well and The Heart Is Not So Smart.

Resolution (1986-1989)

After Bunny and El DeBarge left the band, the other members were hoping to repeat the success of Rhythm of the Night. So they left Motown and changed 1987 Label Striped Horse, also this label could not help the band. In contrast to previous albums, the album Bad Boys very disappointed: the extractions Dance All Night and You Babe were placed very far down in the U.S. R & B charts.
