Deer Tick (band)

Deer Tick ( to German: deer tick ) is an American indie folk band from Providence, Rhode Iceland to the singer-songwriter John McCauley (born 14 June 1986), which first arose in December 2004 as a solo project McCauley. The music of his band includes folk, Americana and blues elements and is characterized by the rough voice McCauley.

Band History

After participation in various school bands and first solo performances during his high school years in Providence, Rhode Iceland, the later founder of Deer Tick, John McCauley III came to pass, after finishing school in 2004, first alone in an almost one-year journey through the United States, during which he regularly appeared as a singer, accompanied only by his own guitar playing. Even at school he had written to her own songs, which were inspired by McCauley's statement, through his experience as "highly depressed teenager ." As early musical influences called McCauley particularly Hank Williams and Ritchie Valens, however, Roy Orbison, Townes Van Zandt and Tom Petty.

After his return to Providence McCauley took over the next two years, alternating with accompanying musicians, various demos and panels on their own in his apartment or in the living room of his parents; including a joint CD with bassist Nat Baldwin of the jazz band Lavender, which was published in the local label table tapes.

The debut album War Elephant, McCauley in its inclusion of some songs played all the instruments himself and his material he had mostly been written at the age of 17 years, first appeared in September 2007 when indie label FEOW! Records of the songwriter Jana Hunter, which, however, shortly thereafter, in January 2008, had to file for bankruptcy. The album initially received good reviews, but since the problems of the label led to that soon were to be repressed no CDs, it came to the unfortunate situation for the band that they are on the tour, which was supposed to promote your album, not in the were able to offer the album to the fans. Finally, Deer Tick came during the year 2008 under the label Partisan Records, the War Elephant re-released on 11 November 2008.

Their second album, Born on Flag Day in June 2009, with a new band line-up - consisting of bassist Christopher Ryan, drummer Dennis Ryan and guitarist Andrew Tobiassen - picked up and placed in the American Billboard charts at # 17 in the category Top Heatseekers and number 44 of the Top Independent Albums. After recording the album met with guitarist Ian O'Neil from New Jerseyer band Titus Andronicus added to the band, replacing Andrew Tobiassen.

Additional attention the band moved in this time also by their appearance in the first issue of Brian Williams' internet music show for NBC BriTunes up.

The EP More Fuel For the Fire January 2010 had stronger alternative country covers than the previous CDs. In June 2010, the third album The Black Dirt Sessions was released; in August, the band performed at the Lollapalooza festival in 2010.

The previous albums of the band are characterized by compositions of frontman John McCauley (some cover versions and ). On the website of the band, however, McCauley announced that they wanted to in the future to record some songs by guitarist Ian O'Neil that already belong to the live program of the band, and compositions by drummer Dennis Ryan.

The band has toured with Jenny Lewis and Neko Case and has earned a reputation as a wild live band acquired, often interacting with the audience during their concerts. In August 2009, in New York, McCauley became engaged during a concert of his band on stage with Nikki Darlin, the ukulele player of the band Those Darlins. 2009 joined the band among others the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the South by Southwest festival on and completed their first European tour with 15 concerts, including in Spain, the Netherlands and the UK.
