The Sinistra Democrática (full name: Sinistra Democratica Per il Socialismo Europeo, dt: . Democratic Left For European socialism; abbreviation: . History

On 5 May 2007, the founding congress of the Sinistra Democrática (SD) was held in Rome, which the Italian Research Minister Fabio Mussi their chairman ( Coordinatore politico ) chose. Then were formed on May 16, 2007 12 senators and 21 deputies of the Party to independent parliamentary factions. In the European Parliament the party is represented by 4 Members belonging to the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES ).

On 2 October 2007 a ​​group led by Senator Gavino Angius and the deputies Franco Grillini, Valdo Spini and Fabio Baratella resigned from the party to the initiative of Enrico Boselli (SDI ) for the establishment of a new social democratic Coalition Party, the Partito Socialista (PS ) to follow.

At a congress of the Italian Left and the Greens on 8 and 9 December 2007, the SD ended with the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (PRC), the Partito dei Comunisti Italiani ( PdCl ) and the Federazione dei Verdi ( Green ) for electoral alliance La Sinistra - L' Arcobaleno ( Eng.: The Left - The Rainbow) together. However, this list could not win any seats in the parliamentary elections of 2008.

On 16 March 2009, the SD of the Sinistra e Libertà new combined list for the European elections followed, but failed with 3.1 percent of the vote, the required four percent hurdle. On 20 December 2009, the SD and the two allies consolidated their cooperation and merged to form the new party Sinistra Ecologia Libertà.
