Denis Gallagher

Denis Gallagher ( Irish: Donnacha Ó Gallchobhair; * November 23, 1923; † 3 November 2001) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

Gallagher was initially worked for many years as a primary school teacher and began in 1973 as the candidate of Fianna Fáil his political career with election as a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he took after five re- elections until 1989, the interests of the constituency of West Mayo.

After the election victory of Fianna Fáil in the general election, he was appointed by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Jack Lynch for the first time as Minister of the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ) July 5, 1977. This office he held until the end of Lynch's term of office on 11 December 1979. Lynch's successor, Charles J. Haughey called Gallagher initially not in his cabinet. However, he later took over in Haugheys government nor of 15 October 1980 to 30 June 1981, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy.

In Haugheys second government, he was the first from March to October 1982 Nation Minister at the Ministry of Social Welfare, before he again was Minister for the Gaeltacht following a government reshuffle on 27 October to 14 December 1982.

Last Gallagher was in third Haugheys government between March 12, 1987 to July 12, 1989 Minister of State for the Gaeltacht. In 1989, he opted not to run again for the Dáil Éireann, and then retired from the government.
