Micheál Ó Móráin

Michael Moran ( Irish: Micheál Ó Móráin; born December 25, 1912 County Mayo; † 6 May 1983; Castlebar, Co. Mayo ) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

Moran studied post-school law and later worked as a solicitor.

In 1938 he was elected as the candidate of Fianna Fáil as a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented there by nine subsequent elections initially to 1969 the constituency of South Mayo, and then until 1973 the constituency of West Mayo.

On 26 June 1957 he was Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Éamon de Valera as Minister of the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ) appointed. The following Cabinet of de Valera's successor Seán Lemass he was then between July 23rd 1959, and the October 11, 1961 Minister of lands. After a further reshuffle, he was then on 11 October 1961 to March 26, 1968 Minister of lands and Minister for the Gaeltacht in the Cabinets of Lemass and Jack Lynch. Prime Minister Lynch appointed him afterwards as part of a Government reshuffle Minister of Justice. Moran served in this office until his resignation on 5 May 1970.

In 1973 he retired from the Dáil Éireann, after he had suffered a defeat in the general election.
