Gerald Boland

Gerald Boland (Irish Gearroid Ua Beolláin, born May 25, 1885 in Manchester, † January 5, 1973 in Dublin) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

Boland, who was an engineer by profession, was the older brother of Harry Boland, the temporary chairman of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

He began his national political career as a Republican candidate in 1923 with the election of deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann, although he is not taking his seat in parliament. 1927 he was elected as representatives of Fianna Fáil to the House and was among this for the constituency of Roscommon after eleven subsequent re- elections until 1961.

In March 1932 he was Parliamentary Under- Secretary of the President of the Executive Council (comparable to today's prime minister) of the Irish Free State and at the same time the Defence Minister and had these offices except for a brief interruption until February 1933 held.

On November 11, 1936, he became Minister for Posts and Telegraphs kept this office until 21 July 1937. At the same time he was on 11 November 1936 to September 8, 1939 to the Minister of lands. On September 8, 1939 it Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Éamon de Valera appointed justice minister in his cabinet, where he remained until February 18, 1948.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil in the general election in 1951 Boland was appointed by Prime Minister de Valera to the Minister of Justice on 13 June 1951, held that office until the end of de Valera's tenure on June 2, 1954.

After 1961 election defeat suffered and retired from the House of Commons, he was a member of the group for industry and trading member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), which he last belonged from 1965 to 1969 as a member nominated by the Prime Minister. In 1969, he opted not to re-apply as a senator and retired from political life.

His son Kevin Boland was also Member of Parliament and was released in 1970 as Minister for the Irish weapons crisis. In protest, he himself stepped down as vice president and trustee ( Trustee ) of the Fianna Fáil.
