Dependent territory

This list includes areas dependent territories that are neither independent states still "normal" parts of a country. It thus are areas that either do not belong entirely due to their geographical location or legal status ( trusteeship, occupation, long-term lease ) with the mother country or in a special relationship stand by him or an extraordinary administrative structure compared to the rest of the country have (eg Hong Kong and Macao in the people's Republic of China). Sometimes, the difference of these areas to the main territory only in the issue of own stamps or to certain tax and customs privileges is limited.

Australia

The outer parts of Australia are managed by different ministries and federal organizations.

  • Ministry of Environment, Sport and Territories: Coral Sea Islands - Norfolk Island
  • Australian Antarctic Division: Australian Antarctic Territory ( not internationally recognized ); Heard Island and McDonald Islands

Some areas of special situation are not managed by the federal government, but are part of Australian states:

People's Republic of China

Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

Denmark

The Faroe Islands and Greenland are part of the Danish kingdom with internal autonomy.

France

  • Five overseas departments (départements d' outre- mer): French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion
  • Five overseas corporate bodies ( collectivités d' outre- mer): French Polynesia, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Wallis and Futuna
  • A corporation sui generis ( collectivité sui generis ): New Caledonia
  • A specially managed area: French Southern and Antarctic Lands ( The Iles Éparses ( Bassas da India, Europe, Îles Glorieuses, Juan de Nova and Tromelin ) belong since 2007 as the fifth district of the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. )
  • The Island Clipperton: Since February 2007, the Clippertoninsel no longer subordinate to the High Commissioner of French Polynesia, but is directly administered by the French Minister for the Overseas Territories. Thus, the Clippertoninsel is owned by the state of the French Republic ( la propriété privée de l' État ).

France's claim on Adélie Land, which to the French Southern and Antarctic Territories counts is not accepted internationally. Madagascar claims all areas of the Iles Eparses up on itself Tromelin, Mauritius lays claim to Tromelin, the Comoros to Mayotte, Vanuatu on the Matthew and Hunter islands of New Caledonia, Suriname on the southwest part of French Guiana.

New Zealand

  • Two self-governing territories in free association with New Zealand: Cook Islands - Niue

The Cook Islands are considered by Germany as an independent state, that is, there are diplomatic relations.

  • A self -governing territory: Tokelau
  • New Zealand claims to the Ross Dependency are not internationally recognized.

The island groups of the New Zealand Outlying Islands, including the Antipodes Islands, Aucklandinseln, Bounty Islands, Campbell Islands, Chathaminseln, snare islands and Kermadecinseln, are not dependent areas, but immediate constituents of the territory of New Zealand.

Netherlands

Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten are full members of the Dutch Kingdom with its own constitution and internal autonomy.

Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius are Special municipalities of the Netherlands Europe.

Norway

Bouvet Island - Jan Mayen - Svalbard - Norwegian territorial claims in Antarctica: Queen Maud Land and Peter I Island

The claims on the two sites in Antarctica are not recognized internationally, Russia enjoys accordance Svalbard Treaty in Spitsbergen contractual privileges.

Portugal

The Azores and Madeira in the Atlantic form two autonomous regions of Portugal.

Spain

  • An autonomous region (two provinces ) in the Atlantic: Canary Islands
  • Two enclaves ( autonomous cities ) on the coast of Morocco: Ceuta - Melilla
  • Three islands / island groups off the coast of Morocco, Peñón de Alhucemas - Islas Chafarinas - Vélez de la Gomera

Vélez de la Gomera is now connected with the mainland.

United States

  • Two associated Commonwealth: Northern Mariana Islands - Puerto Rico
  • Two nichtinkorporierte, organized territories: American Virgin Islands - Guam
  • A nichtinkorporiertes, not formally organized territory: American Samoa
  • Eight other ( virtually uninhabited ) nichtinkorporierte unorganized territories: Baker Island - Howland Island - Jarvis Island - Johnston Atoll - Kingman Reef - Midway Islands - Navassa - Wake

Haiti claimed Navassa itself, the Marshall Islands, Wake, Cuba Guantanamo Bay.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has a number of overseas territories with highly differentiated self-government rights:

Guernsey, Jersey and Man are as Kronbesitz directly subordinated to the British crown.

Akrotiri and Dhekelia With controls two base areas in Cyprus British sovereignty.

The claims on the Antarctic Territory are not recognized internationally, Argentina also uses the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands themselves, Spain Gibraltar, Mauritius and the Seychelles, the British Indian Ocean Territory.
