Derek Ezra, Baron Ezra

Derek Ezra, Baron Ezra MBE ( born February 23, 1919) is a British politician ( Liberal Democrats ) and economic functionary.

Life and career

Ezra was born on 23 February 1919 as the son of David and Lily Ezra. He attended Monmouth School in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. He graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge University with a Master of Arts.

During the Second World War and in the postwar years until 1947 he served in the Army. In 1947 he joined the National Coal Board and was 1958-1960 Regional Sales Manager (Regional Sales Manager). From 1952 to 1956 he was a member of the British delegation to the European Coal and Steel Community, moreover he was chairman of the National Coal Board.

During his studies at the University, he joined the Liberal Party in 1936. There he became a member of the Cambridge University Liberal Club and later member of the committee.

He has worked in senior positions at NBC from 1958 to 1960 as a Regional Sales Manager ( Regional Sales Managing ), from 1965 to 1967 as General Manager for Marketing and from 1965 to 1982 as director. From 1960 to 1965 he was a member of the National Coal Board, as General Manager in Marketing. From 1965 to 1967 he was a member of the Board, 1967-1971 Vice Chairman ( Deputy Chairman ) and 1971-1982 Chairman ( Chairman ). From 1966 to 1999 he was president ( chairman ) of the Associated Heat Services plc. From 1976 to 1978 he was a member of the British Institute of Management. From 1990 to 1999 he worked for Energy and Technical Services Group plc. From 2000 he worked for Micro Power Ltd..

From 1982 to 1987 he was a consultant for industrial affairs (Industrial Advisor) at Morgan Grenfell. From 1981 to 1986, President Ezra the Coal Industry and Society 1987-1992 President of the Coal Institute of Trading Standards Administration. From 1983 to 1987 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the British Iron & Steel Consumers' Council. Ezra was from 1982 to 1989 director of Redland plc and from 1979 to 1989 by Solvay SA.

Membership in the House of Lords

Ezra was appointed on 2 February 1983 Life peer as Baron Ezra, of Horsham in the County of West Sussex. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 2 March 1983. In the House of Lords he advocates mainly for energy issues and from 1998 to 2005, the spokesman for the Liberal Democrats for energy affairs.

From 2001, he was first in regular attendance, now he is only rarely present because of his age and failing health. On a vote he took part last on 18 June 2008. At debates, he continues to participate.

Work in the public

He is patron ( patron ) of the Combustion Engineering Association. This organization awards named after him Derek Ezra Award for "outstanding achievements in the research of combustion technology ". 2003 gave Ezra the price Valentina Čvoro for outstanding achievements in the study of combustion technology.

Ezra dealt in recent years with the effects of the environment on clean coal technology and the problem of energy poverty. He also founded a company that is committed to the promotion of alternative power generation.

Honors

Ezra was in 1945 awarded the Bronze Star in the USA. In the same year he became a member of the Order of the British Empire ( MBE). In 1974 he became a Knight Bachelor. With the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic Ezra was honored in 1979. In the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate Doctor of Science ( D.Sc. ) from Cranfield University. In 1981 he was honored with the Officer of the Legion of Honour and in the same year with the Commander of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In 1981 he received an honorary doctorate degree Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ) from the University of Leeds.

Family

Ezra married in 1950 Julia Elizabeth Wilkins, who is now deceased. Currently (as of 2012) he lives in the Belgravia district of the City of Westminster.
