Derek Smith (ice hockey, born 1984)

Derek Smith ( born October 13, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player standing since 2011 with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League under contract and playing in parallel for the Abbotsford Heat in the American Hockey League.

Career

Derek Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Wellington Dukes, for which he was active from 2000 to 2004 in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He then spent three years at the Lake Superior State University, for their hockey team he played in parallel in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. On 12 April 2007 the defender signed a contract as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators. For their farm team Binghamton Senators, he played from 2007 to 2011 regularly in the American Hockey League and won with the team in the season 2010/11 the Calder Cup. In addition, he played a game in this period for the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. From 2009 to 2011, he was in a total of eleven games for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League on the ice, but at first could not prevail there.

For the 2011/12 season joined Smith in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, where he scored two goals and nine assists in his first year in 47 games.
