Des Deutschen Vaterland
The German Fatherland is a 1813 Ernst Moritz Arndt ( 1769-1860 ) penned before the Battle of Leipzig song.
Formation
In the lyrics of the song Arndt presents first the German question, and finally calls for a greater German nation-state, which should include all German-speaking countries of Europe, including the German Switzerland (see DA -CH ). It has a verse on anti-French tendencies, due to its origins during the French occupation forces and directed against this war of liberation. On the occasion of the victory over Napoleon and the invasion of Blücher's troops in Paris in 1814, the song was first performed in Berlin.
Since the melody was not well received by the audience, the song had its effect. Of the many musical settings of the song is that devised by Gustav Reichardt 1825, the most famous today. Reichardt, she published in 1826 in a collection of men's quartets. Over time, the song of large parts of the German population in addition to the Germany song was sung as a national anthem of the unification movement. Reichardt had occurred to the melody, as he had mounted with four friends Sněžka. Later, the German Language Association was fit at the local chapel, a memorial plaque.
As of 1870, the song was replaced by The Watch on the Rhine.
When August Heinrich Hoffmann von Faller life (1798-1874) in 1843 was in exile, he referred to in his autobiographical song about the German immigration to this song.
