Dessa is a rural municipality in the Department Tilabéri in Niger.

Geography

Dessa is located in the Sahel is to the north west of the regional capital Tilabéri on the Niger River. The neighboring municipalities are Dessas Ayérou in the north, Anzourou in the east, and Bibiyergou Sinder in the south and Bankilaré, Kokorou and MEHANA in the West. The municipality is divided into 17 administrative villages, a traditional village and 73 hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Dessa.

History

The area of the canton Dessa was extended in 1933 to the administrative villages Diamona, Katanga ( Sassalé ) Nassiré, Tondia and Wali. These were settlements of Bella, former slaves of Rhattafan, which now came under the Kurtey - local chief of Dessa. This intensified the rivalry between Rhattafan and Kurtey.
