Kokorou

Kokorou (also: Kokoro ) is a rural municipality in the department of Tera in Niger.

Geography

Kokorou located in the southern Sahel, on the Niger River. The neighboring municipalities are Bankilaré the northwest, Dessa in the northeast, MEHANA and Sinder in the east, in the southeast and Dargol Téra in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 23 administrative villages, two traditional villages, 145 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Kokorou.

The wetlands of Kokorou - Namga ( Namga is an administrative village of the rural community ) declared 2001 Ramsar site. The area covers 66 829 hectares.

History

After the fall of the Songhai Oak's 1591 Kokorou was one of those places in present-day Niger, at which Songhai refugees settled under a descendant of the former ruling dynasty Askia. The ruler Fari - Monzon was founded here by the State GOURMEY. His son and successor was Balma, this was followed by his son Oudiendi after. During the Fulani wars of the 19th century Yahimonzon was the ruler of Kokorou. He and his descendants had to fend among other Fulbe from Torodi, thus tackling shifting alliances with other Songhai and the Tuareg. 1899 reached the area of Kokorou as part of the newly created circle Sinder under French military administration. 1905, the site became part of the new military territory of Niger. The French colonial administration set up in a Kokorou a canton. The Canton Kokorou was disbanded in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform and divided its territory to the rural communities Kokorou and MEHANA. 2009 were damaged by flooding 335 inhabitants. When the floods in West and Central Africa 2010 875 persons were classified as disaster victims in Kokorou.

Population

At the 2001 census Kokorou had 71,200 inhabitants. For the year 2010 94.302 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and infrastructure

Along the River Niger in the northeast wet rice cultivation is practiced. The rest of the community area lies in a zone is operated in the rain-fed agriculture.
