Torodi

Region

Torodi is a rural municipality and the capital of the eponymous department Torodi in Niger.

Geography

Torodi lies south of the Niger River at the junction of the Sahel to large landscape Sudan in the wetlands. South of the town center there is the river bed of the Goroubi, a tributary of the Niger. The Forêt de classée Faira is a 8500 acre protected nature woodland area in the municipality of Torodi. The protected status was 1950.

The municipality is divided into 69 administrative villages, four traditional villages, 202 hamlets and a warehouse. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Torodi. From a geological point is the location at 184 meters above sea level in a community the Precambrian era allocated area. Torodi bordered to the west by the neighboring country of Burkina Faso. The neighboring communities in Niger are Dargol and Namaro in the north, and Bitinkodji Guélédjo Ouro in the east and in the south Makalondi.

History

In 1882, the Fulbe taught a seat of power (French: chefferie ) in Torodi. During the military occupation of the later Niger colony by France, the place was in 1899 joined the French colony of Dahomey and Niger came to later. The French made 1902 Torodi a canton. 1971 in the independent Niger, the place was in addition to administrative posts (French: post administratif ) levied. As part of a nationwide administrative reform during 2002, from the Canton Torodi out the rural community Torodi. Makalondi was dissolved in 2009 as a separate country church from the rural community Torodi. The administrative posts of Torodi was removed in 2011 from the department of Say and collected at the Department Torodi.

Population

At the 2001 census Torodi had 114 518 inhabitants. For the year 2010 151.541 inhabitants were calculated. Both figures refer to Torodi including Makalondi. The longer-term residents in the village are ethnic Fulani and Zarma Gourmantché. In addition there are other immigrant groups, such as Hausa and -arrived from the neighboring country of Mali residents.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in a zone is operated in the rain-fed agriculture, and is affected by violent land use conflicts. In Torodi weekly there is a large cattle market. Through the town, the National Road 6, which connects the Nigerien capital Niamey with Ouagadougou, the capital of the neighboring country Burkina Faso.
