Namaro

Region

Namaro is a rural municipality in the department of co-location in Niger.

Geography

Namaro located in the southern Sahel, on the Niger River northwest of the capital Niamey. The neighboring municipalities are Kourteye in the North, Karma in the northeast, Bitinkodji the southeast, Torodi the southwest, Dargol in the west and Gothèye in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 22 administrative villages, 36 hamlets and a warehouse. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Namaro.

History

The villages Bangou Kouarey, Sikiay and Yonkoto in the municipality of Namaro were among those places in present-day Niger, where settled after the fall of the Songhai Songhai - Eich 1591 refugees under a descendant of the former ruling dynasty Askia. The village is a Namaro Songhai foundation of the 17th century.

The French colonial administration set up in the early 20th century, a canton in Namaro and recognized the local Songhai ruler Sidi as Canton boss. The rural community Namaro was founded in 2002 at a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Namaro forth. When the floods in West and Central Africa 2010 19.284 inhabitants of Namaro were classified as disaster victims, as many as in any other community of Niger.

Population

At the 2001 census Namaro had 33 527 inhabitants. For the year 2010 46.809 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and infrastructure

Along the river wet rice cultivation is practiced. The western municipality is located in a zone is operated in the rain-fed agriculture. By Namaro the National Road 4, which connects the village to the border with Burkina Faso at Téra runs.
