Deutsche Ornithologen-Gesellschaft

The German Ornithological Society ( DO-G ) is a scientific society for the promotion of Ornithology. It was founded in 1850 and has been established as a non-profit registered society.

History

The DO- G was founded in Leipzig in October 1850 Johann Friedrich Naumann, Eduard Baldamus ( 1812-1893 ) and Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer. She went out in 1845 resulting Ornithological section within the Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians forth. The first decade of its existence, was overshadowed by a dispute between Edward and Jean Louis Cabanis Baldamus. Both claimed their Magazines Naumannia (Editor: Baldamus ) and Journal of Ornithology (Editor: Cabanis ) the title of an official organ of the Association. The dispute culminated in 1867, initiated by Cabanis establishment of a second association with the name German Ornithological Society. Between 1870 and 1874 the waves and both companies smoothed unite in May 1875 in Braunschweig for General German Ornithological Society. President was now EF von Homeyer, who had listened to both clubs. This company was active until 1944.

1949, met members of the DO- G, and agreed to take up the dormant for five years, the Company's business again. Since this seemed possible in the Soviet- occupied East Berlin only with great difficulty, it was decided in Freiburg to a reestablishment of the original name German Ornithologists' Society DO-G and moved the company's headquarters in 1961 from East Berlin to Radolfzell on Lake Constance. The new constitution provided for neither a formal successor to the General German Ornithological Society, nor a merger was legally possible. For this reason, both companies continue to exist with identical boards of directors and organs until today. In a ceremony held in 2000 in Leipzig, German ornithologists reminded why both the 150th anniversary of its scientific community as well as the 50th anniversary of its foundation (1950 ) and the 125th anniversary of the German Ornithological Society.

In the early years of the Management Board consisted of a 5- 7- member board. All Executive Board members had the same rights as the elected chairman. Its own chairman of the meeting nor was selected for the first annual meetings.

Magazines

The DO-G publishes two magazines. Main organ is the Journal of Ornithology, by the year 2003 ( up to 144 band ) under the German title Journal of Ornithology. It was founded in 1853 and is the world's oldest existing ornithological journal.

Together with the Institute of Avian Research " Ornithological Helgoland " in Wilhelmshaven, the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology " Radolfzell ornithological " in Radolfzell giving " Ornithological Hiddensee " at the University of Greifswald and the " ringing Hiddensee " the DO-G also the journal Vogelwarte ( continued from Bird migration, founded in 1930 ) out.

Meetings

The DO-G is directed each year from one years meeting at different universities. It is the most important annual meeting for Ornithology in Germany. Since 2010 she has also organizes a small junior Annual Meeting to make the DO-G for young ornithologists attractive.

Networking

The German Ornithological Society is the initiator of the establishment of the Federation of German Avifaunists. It is, not least through its project groups, with numerous German and international research institutions and conservation organizations closely linked.
