Deutzia

Deutzia crenata

The Deutzien ( Deutzia ) are a genus of the family of hydrangea plants ( Hydrangeaceae ). Some species of shrubs closely with the pipes ( Philadelphus ) related genus are popular ornamental plants.

Description

The Deutzien are deciduous, usually upright growing shrubs with terete branches. The branches are usually hollow or have a loose, light brown to brown marks. The bark is thin and finely fissured lengthwise. The buds are 3-7 mm long, ovate to oblong- ovate, sometimes square and all about the same. The bud scales are pointed. The leaf scars are V-shaped and show traces of three vascular bundles.

The leaves are arranged on opposite sides. They are usually short-stalked, ovate to lanceolate directed with notched or serrated leaf edge and the blade tip teeth. Both sides are pressed stellate hairs. Stipules absent.

The flowers have a diameter of 1 to 2.5 inches. They are arranged to few to about 25 in panicles, grapes, cymes or umbels at the end of a short, pendent and leafy shoots. The calyx is bell-shaped, five-lobed. Barren flowers missing. The five imbricate or klappig arranged petals are spatulate to ovate and white to pink. 10 to 15, the stamens are shorter than the petals. The stamens are commended shaped forked to linear and at the far end. The pen is non- growing. The ovary is under constant three to fünffächrig, the ovules are arranged transversely. The fruit is a capsule. The numerous, 0.5 to 3 mm long seeds are winged.

The chromosome numbers amount to n = 13, 26, 39, 52 and 65

Dissemination

The distribution of the genus is disjunct, ranging from Mexico to Asia (including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, China) to the Himalaya. Center of diversity is China.

System

The genus was first described in 1781 by Carl Peter Thunberg. The genus name refers to John of the Deutz (1743-1788), a Dutch councilors and supporters of CP Thunberg.

Overall, the genus of about 60 species in three sections ( Neodeutzia, Mesodeutzia and Deutzia ) and six sub- sections and 16 series is to be divided. The Plant List lists the following species of the genus on:

Ornamental plant

Deutzien are often grown as ornamentals for their white flowers. Many cultivars and hybrids were selected for use in the garden, including varieties with double flowers. For example Deutzia x lemoinei a hybrid of Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia parviflora. The identification can be difficult, as are many plants that are sold as Deutzia scabra actually the type Deutzia crenata.
