Dewey D. Scanlon ( born August 16, 1899 in Duluth, Minnesota, † April 24, 1944, ibid ) was a U.S. American football player, manager and coach.

Players and coaching career

Dewey Scanlon attended Valparaiso University in Chicago and played for their football team College Football on the position of quarterbacks.

In 1923 he was one of the founders of the Duluth Kelleys, who had settled in the National Football League ( NFL). Co-owner of the team were also the players of the team. Scanlon worked as Manager of the Kelleys. In 1924, he released also from Joey Sternaman as head coach of the team. Due to financial problems, the Kelleys were sold in 1925 to Ole Haugsrud and Scanlon. Haugsrud henceforth acted as manager of the team, Scanlon remained the team as a coach. For the 1926 season they could strengthen the team with the later members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Ernie Nevers, Walt Kiesling and John McNally. The Kelleys were renamed in Duluth Eskimos. This season, Dewey Scanlon had his one and only use as a player. Sporty but the team was unsuccessful. Before the season 1927 Nevers took over as coach of Scanlon. However, could not be prevented even by the change in the coaching positions that had to retire from the NFL due to financial problems the Eskimos after the season 1927.

Scanlon took over in 1929, the coach of the Chicago Cardinals. The Cardinals occupied after the season in fourth place in the NFL. Scanlon ended after one round his coaching career.

After coaching career

Dewey Scanlon worked after his career in Duluth on a shipyard. He died in 1944 in a domestic accident.
