Dick Howard (athlete)

Dick Howard (actually Richard Wayne Howard, born August 22, 1935 in Oklahoma City, † November 9, 1967 in Hollywood) was an American hurdler, who specializes in the 400-meter distance.

At the Pan American Games in 1959 in Chicago, he won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 with his personal best time of 49.7 s the bronze medal behind his compatriots Glenn Davis ( 49.3 s ) and Clifton Cushman ( 49.6 s ).

In 1959, he was starting for the University of New Mexico, NCAA champion in the 440 yards hurdles and U.S. champion in the 400m hurdles. In 1960 he won the national title over 200 meters hurdles.

Dick Howard died of a heroin overdose.
