Dickinson is a city in Galveston County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is centrally located in Orange County, in southeast Texas, 45 miles from Houston, 31 miles from Galveston and in the southeast 12 km from the Gulf of Mexico.

History

In 1824, John Dickinson from the Mexican government for permission here to take possession of the land, and before 1850 there was a small settlement, which was named after him. 1850 moved the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad tracks her through the town. During the American Civil War in 1863, General John Bankhead Magruder took precisely this line to the relief of Galveston.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,093 people in 6,162 households and 4,522 families. The population density was 683.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 72.35 % White, 10.52 % African American, 0.64 % Native American, 1.21 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 12.82 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.43% were of mixed descent, and 24.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,162 households, 36.6 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.4 % were married couples living together. 13.0 % were single mothers and 26.6 % were non-families. 21.6 % of all households were single-person households and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size amounted to 3.22.

28.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6 % from 18 to 24, 30.5% 25-44, 21.8 % from 45 to 64, and 9.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,984, and the median income for a family $ 46,585. Males had a median income of $ 36,391 versus $ 26,943 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,785. 13.1 % of the population and 9.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 17.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 or older.
