The Homage to the Arts is a dramatic poem by Friedrich Schiller. It was first performed in honor of the Hereditary Princess Maria Pavlovna, daughter of the Russian Tsar Paul I on 12 November 1804 in Weimar and is the last dramatic work of Schiller.

Action

A farmer's family wants to honor their new queen a great feast to prepare her a worthy reception. It is planted as a symbol of home a tree. Architecture, sculpture, painting, poetry, music, dance and drama: As the seven arts appear. You assume the welcoming of the new ruler. The final sentence of the poem expresses the artistic credo of Friedrich Schiller:

Because of the forces beautifully unified force struts / Rises, acting, only real life

On the origin

The Hereditary Prince Friedrich of Weimar had married Maria Pavlovna ( sister of Tsar Alexander I. ). Schiller appeared at that time together with Johann Wolfgang Goethe at Weimar Court Theatre and was commissioned to mark the solemn feeder of the pair to write a small piece. The Homage to the Arts was established - under great pressure of time - in just four days.
