Diego Laynez

Diego Lainez, gelegentl. Diego also Laynez, (* 1512 in Almazan, Castile; † January 19, 1565 in Rome ) was the second general of the Society of Jesus.

Life

Diego Lainez was born in 1512 as the eldest son of a Marrano family in Almazan ( Soria province ). From 1528 he studied with Alfonso Salmeron at the University of Alcalá and graduated in 1532 with a Master of Arts from. He then went with Salmeron to the Sorbonne in Paris to study theology. There he soon acquainted with his compatriot Ignatius of Loyola.

1552/53 Laínez was appointed Provincial of the Italian Province of the Order. On August 4, 1556 was summoned him Vicar General. After the death of Loyola ( July 31, 1556 ), the General Assembly of the Order elected him on July 2, 1558 to the 2nd General of the Order.

Under his leadership, the Order experienced a major boom. His first act in his new office was changing the orientation of the Order of the pure pastoral care towards the teaching and educational Order. Pope Pius IV admitted some time later to the Order to confer academic degrees also. Through the establishment of many new colleges Laínez broadened the base of the Order.

At the age of 53 years, Diego Lainez, died on January 19 in Rome. Francisco de Borja became his successor.
