Diego Pérez (tennis)

Diego Pérez ( born February 9, 1962 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan former tennis player.

Life

Pérez, who each won the silver medal at the South American Games in 1978 already, both in single as well as on the side of Pablo Stapff in a double, took part in the 1980 Junior tournament of the French Open and reached the semi-finals. He eventually was defeated in three sets against Henri Leconte. In the years 1982 and 1983 he was the national tennis champion of Uruguay. His first tournament victory came in 1981 at the site of José Luis Damiani in Palermo. It should pass over a decade before he could win another doubles title on the ATP World Tour. After several semi-finals in singles between 1982 and 1984, he celebrated in 1985 in Bordeaux, his first and only single item. In the following years, he could not go on from his earlier successes in individual; instead, he scored in double good results, so he stood between 1985 and 1989 with different partners in eight finals, but without being able to win a title. Only in 1991, ten years after his first doubles title, he won on the side of Christian Miniussi the Challenger tournament in Cervia. 1992 and 1993 won Pérez two more doubles titles on the ATP World Tour. He also celebrated between 1991 and 1995 a total of three doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. The highest quotation in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1984 with position 27 in the singles and 1987, position 37 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the second round of the French Open in 1992. In the doubles competition, he reached in each case the third round at the U.S. Open and the French Open, where he also was in 1990 in the second round of the mixed competition.

Pérez played 1979-1995 continuously for the Uruguay Davis Cup team. He graduated from there 54 single and 29 double batches. With the team he was three times in the first round of the World Group. The first two matches against Mexico and the Netherlands both declined significantly lost. 1994 defeated Uruguay barely 2:3 against Austria. Pérez lost his opening match against Thomas Muster won at the side of Marcelo Filippini the double and his second singles match against Gilbert Schaller thereafter. While his individual score is positive with 31:23 turned out, he was in double with 8:21 clearly less effective.

Moreover, Pérez participated in the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in 1995 in part and won the silver medal there.
