Formation

Shortly after the recording of Killing Technology in early 1987 the band started to write new songs. The majority of the tracks on the album was in the time between the U.S. and European tour. Immediately after completion of the tour began on 4 December 1987, the recordings in the studio Musiclab in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin. Producer Harris Johns was, who had already performed this task during the recording of Killing Technology. The musician turned out to be very keen to experiment, as used singer Denis Belanger the intercom system of the studio for his vocals and drummer Michel Langevin sat in places, an electronic drum one. On the origin of the song Tribal Convictions said guitarist Denis D' Amour, the whole song was created in principle to those used tremolo guitar effect around. The band was until January 4, 1988 at the studio and enjoyed in their own words the atmosphere in divided Berlin and the mild in comparison to their home Québec European winter temperatures.

In March 1988, the German independent label Noise Records released the album in Europe, Canada and the United States was the publication in June of the same year. On the first edition of the LP was a sticker with the words " Canada's Nuclear Metal warriors. More psychedelic than ever. The cult lives! " Attached. On the CD version of the song was included Batman, a cover version of Neal Hefti. The album was shortly after its appearance in the broadcast of the GDR on the transmitter DT 64 in the show duet offered music for the recorder to a free recording.

Musical meaning

The album marks the transition of the band from a pure thrash metal with punk influences to progressive metal, which reached its commercial peak with Nothingface. To the song Tribal Convictions a music video was released that the band gave the breakthrough.

Concept and design

The basic concept and the design came from drummer Michel Langevin, who was inspired by popular science magazines of his time such as Omni or Discover:

" In the story, it's about this gigantic particle accelerator, which is a micro- universe in the laboratory created by a mini Big Bang, in which then travels to the Voivod to study evolution. Unfortunately, the whole thing ends in a war with apocalyptic proportions, whereupon the Voivod attempts to cancel the experiment, because it is a complete failure. "

It is in dimension Hatröss a concept album. The A- side of the LP is as a prologue, which denotes the B-side as an epilogue. In the first experiment, the Voivod piece creates the artificial universe and travels inside. There he meets in Tribal Convictions on creatures of low intelligence, which consider him a god. The third song Chaos Mongers is about his encounter with a very aggressive form of life that would be described in the real world as terrorists. Technocratic manipulator describes the ruling in this world class technocrats than that suppress and control the population. Was inspired by this piece of the book in 1984. The epilogue begins in Macro Solutions to mega problem with the struggle of "Chaos Monger " against the government. In BrainSCAN the Voivod meets a highly evolved species, the only mentally exists and Psychic Vacuum trying to break into the interior of the Voivod. He then flees into Cosmic drama of this microcosm back to his laboratory and destroyed his creation.

The term " Hatröss " for the created microcosm is an idea of Langevin, hate (English, hate ') and atroce (French, gruesome ') combined to this word. The album cover is also by Langevin and is the last thing that he has painted. In the following years he switched to computer graphics.

Reviews

Like other reviewers, he emphasizes the change in vocal style by Denis Belanger, who as on the previous albums no longer screams otherwise. Thomas Copper noticed that it was Voivod with this album the first time succeeded to "conduct in smarter ways" the " uncompromising thrash metal " of the first three albums and referred to the band's style as "Psycho Thrash ".
