Dirk van Dalen

Dirk van Dalen ( born December 20, 1932 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch mathematician (mathematical logic), science philosopher and historian of mathematics.

Life

Van Dalen studied at the University of Amsterdam where he on the application of intuitionistic logic of Brouwer Luitzen Egbertus January in geometry at Arend Heyting in 1963 received his doctorate ( Extensions in intuitionistic plane geometry, Indag.Math. Bd.25 ). As a post-doc, he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Oxford. Since 1960 he was at the University of Utrecht, first in the mathematics department since 1967 as a professor in the Faculty of Arts. In 1997 he retired, but further teaches the history of logic and philosophy of mathematics ( 2009).

Van Dalen wrote a biography of Brouwer and Brouwer led the project, which he published lectures by Brouwer and Brouwer 1981 The Foundations of Mathematics and intuitionism (1992, Bibliographical Institute ) and Anne Troelstra the Centenary Symposium on Brouwer's 100th birthday (1982 ).

In 2003 he received the Medal ( Academy Penning ) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Since 1998 he has been a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. In 2007 he was made an honorary member of the Dutch Mathematical Society ( Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap ), on whose invitation he lecture The Revolution of 1907 2008 - Brouwer's dissertation held at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam. In 1962 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm ( Some problems in intuitionistic affine geometry ).
