Doctor Snuggles

Doctor Snuggles is a British-Dutch animated series from the year 1979. The series is about the unusual inventor Doctor Snuggles.

Doctor Snuggles, the main character of the series, is an optimistic inventors and do-gooders who always finds a solution. Snuggles lives in a typical English cottage in the country. In the bizarre world of Doctor Snuggles almost all objects and animals are enlivened and inspired, such as the barn, the badger Dennis, the mouse Nibblers, fearful of the river or the robot Mathilde doses catcher. All have strong personalities and lovable human characteristics. Doctor Snuggles and his animal friends usually drive Miss cleanly, the good soul of Doctor Snuggles ' property, often downright insane.

Main characters

He is the main character of the series. Its distinctive characters are his umbrella (English name: Jefferson ) who serves him as a pogo stick, and his pocket watch ticker and its very durable fly. He is always friendly, optimistic and helpful. In the English version it Sir Peter Ustinov lends his voice.

Dennis is a rather cozy, talking badger in blue dungarees. Not least because of his talent in crafting things he has often ideas which continue the story. Frequently he makes a joke of it to annoy Nibbler.

Nibbler is called a lazy mouse in hooped, sleeveless shirt, who lives in the kitchen of Dr. Snuggles and is crazy about cheese. It drives Miss cleanly often insane and often brings all parties into trouble.

The elderly housekeeper of Dr. Snuggles considered his inventions always very suspicious and tends easily to resign.

Mathilde is in the first episode of Dr. Snuggles invented to help Miss cleanly. It consists mainly of cans and other rubbish and can not speak as one of the few characters on the show.

Granny Stuffed is an older lady and good friend of Dr. Snuggles. She has a big heart for cats, so she founded next to their house a cat hospital. The Kosmokatze also lives with her.

The Kosmokatze, as their name suggests, comes from outer space. If Dr. Snuggles not know what to do in difficult situations, he asks them for advice.

Wilhelma wine vinegar (English name: Winnie Vinegar Bottle) is a cozy witch who has grown into a large wine vinegar bottle to her house, which is located in the huge salt - and - pepper Mountains. Wilhelma is a good friend of the doctor, who with their magic powers standing by him from time to time - but only as long as it has no bad mood.

Willi (English name: Willie the Fox) is an upright running fox with a black tie and a bowler hat who does not stop with Carlie rat's head to play Dr. Snuggles pranks, or trying to rob him. Willi like to give orders and called stupid rat his partner.

Carlie rat head (English name: Charlie Council ) is a small, upright running rat in black jacket and with a long nose. He is the faithful but dim-witted companion of the Willi Fuchs and calls him willingly boss. His loyalty to Willi is, however, driven from time to time by its rabid habit to their limits.

The Professor (English name: Professor Emerald) is an evil wizard who inhabits his home, the castle seaweed in the open sea. By means of his magic powers with which he teleport, turn into a vulture or can fly on a carpet, he opposes the good intentions of the doctor's evil and willful action.

Creation and publication

The characters and the world of Doctor Snuggles were developed in 1978 by Jeffrey O'Kelly. The rights to the characters are now back at O'Kelly. The individual episodes of the TV series were written by well-known authors, mainly by Richard Carpenter, who also wrote Catweazle, and Paul Halas. Additional authors were known by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams and become his radio producer John Lloyd. Of these, the episodes were 7 The water thieves from space and 12 The Journey to Nowhere. An episode was written by Loek boiler.

The series was broadcast in the UK from 1 October 1979 to 1980 by ITV. From June 24 1981 to 22 September 1981, the broadcast was followed by the first program ( ARD) in the FRG. In 2008, the series was released on three DVDs under the title Doctor Snuggles. Collector's Box with Universal.

Comic Series

In 1981, the Condor -Verlag published a comic series for television series. Of these ten books have been published. For each issue the stories of the television episodes have been published as several smaller comic stories. So, for example, forms from the series The water thieves from space, the initial part where Dr. Snuggles the reason for the drying up of the river - bed finds out and the river persuaded to flow from its source in the cave back into the sea, a separate story.
