The Domhütte is an alpine hut of the Swiss Alpine Club, Section Uto, Zurich. It is located in the Swiss canton of Valais in Mischabelgruppe the Valais Alps. It acts mainly as a base for climbing the Duomo, with the 4,545 m above sea level. M. highest located entirely on Swiss soil mountain. In addition, the cabin serves as the starting point of the ascent of six other four-thousand of Mischabelgruppe. The access is from Randa. This ascent route takes about 4 ½ hours to complete and requires sure-footedness and a bit of vertigo.

The cottage is farmed in the summer months, while the rest of the time is a winter room. The inauguration of the first Domhütte, then called Festihütte, took place on 27 July 1890.

History

The initiative to build a hut at the foot of the cathedral was in 1883 by the parish priest in Randa, Josef Imboden, from. He wrote a letter to the President of the Section Monta Rosa SAC: " The Dom- ascent absolutely needs a club hut, like the various sections of the Swiss Alpine Club mutually join hands to create a small, necessary work. " This letter he included a sketch plan and even an estimate. It took seven years to the Zurich section of the Uto SAC is dedicated to his concerns and, after some initial resistance from the community Randa to build a little hut tackled. This was Josef Imboden on July 27, 1890 consecrate personally. The architect was later warden Daniel Brantschen. The construction costs of 20 people offered hut amounted to CHF 4015.60, at that time it was called Festihütte.

1903, the stone slab roof was replaced with a tin roof. In the years 1918 and 1919, the hut of G. Kruck was rebuilt, enlarged and a terrace porch added. Now offered 24 climbers place. In the 1950s, the existing cottage was not for the surge. About 100 meters closer to the Festigletscher a new hut was built. Architect Jakob Eschenmoser put the section Uto in February 1956 two project designs for the new building before: a normal solution, which provided one of the Täschhütte similar construction, as well as a revolutionary design with irregular, polygonal plan. The latter was put into action. Eschenmoser assumed that with a polygonal ground plan significantly more beds could be accommodated in a small space, because the space in the foot area was significantly lower than the shoulder level. Place Economic reasons were thus responsible for the reminiscent of a rock crystal form of the hut. The topping out ceremony was celebrated in August 1957. The construction costs amounted to CHF 132'367, 60. In 1978, the lodge was also according to plans of architect Eschenmoser, rebuilt and extended, so that they are now 23 and a total of 75 additional beds offered.

Since the Domhütte no longer met the needs of the 21st century, another conversion and extension was considered mandatory. In 2009, the design by architects Galli & Rudolf was before this. It provided a gentle renovation of the old hut at the Hüttenbauphilosophie of the pioneer Jacob Eschenmoser should remain visible. In addition, a new construction and the remodeling of existing cultivation was provided. The lounge of the Eschenmoser - hut has been preserved and has also been extended so that even at full occupancy of the cottage guests can eat at the same time and no longer needs to be eaten in two layers. The previous extension was the connecting link between the old building of stone and the new building in wood. The number of beds remained at 75, the space per sleeping space has been greatly enlarged. Toilets and washroom are now within the hut, and there is a shower. Actually, the construction for the year 2011 was planned, but had to be canceled because the estimated cost of 2.8 had risen to 3.5 million and the additional budget had to be applied. The project was finally begun in 2012, foundation stone was laid on 29 June 2012, the inauguration of the new hut was held on 6 and 7 July 2013.

Increase

Starting point of the hut increase is Randa ( 1'406 m above sea level. M. ). From the train station there it goes up past the church and in a northeasterly direction to get over the meadows of Upper Matt to the village stream, the drainage of Festigletschers. Shortly thereafter, one turns to a road fork to the right and come in many sweeping upward through a larch forest, on the slopes of Lärchbergs. It is always north of the current flowing in an east-west direction of the village Erbach well above the riverbed. Shortly above the tree line crosses the ascent route to the Domhütte the European path, a path from Bern to Zermatt, near the Europe hut. After another steep piece by Alphänge it is a steep rock step to overcome the so-called Festiflüe. About grass strips, gullies and rocky steps here the trail leads in a south-easterly direction. The more difficult rock sections are covered with iron pins, steel cables and ladders. At an altitude of 2800 meters, it is flat again, until finally you see the hut. From Randa takes about 4 ½ hours for this increase, there are around 1540 meters of altitude to deal with. In the SAC - scale traveling the route is evaluated with T4. In spring, the increase is problematic before the rock passage is free of snow. Backcountry skiers must wear almost to the ski lodge.
