Dombóvár

Dombóvár [ dombova ː r] ( German: Dombowa ) is located in the south of Hungary in Tolna county, between the Danube, Drava and Lake Balaton. Today, the town has nearly 20,000 inhabitants ( 2011).

History

Already in Roman times, the place under the name Pons Sociorum Mansuectina was known. However, it was then only a bridge over the river Kapos, who acted as a military fortification of a nearby village ( Alsóhetény ).

The castle was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. The circular mound, extending about a central elevation is around, almost intact and still shows the remains of the artificial fortress.

For a long time it was owned by the Dombó family, which also became the namesake of the city. Between 1535 and 1539 remained there Sebestyen Tinódi on, an important representative of its time. The poet and lutenist wrote during his stay in the work " Jason and Medea " (Jason és Medea ).

From 1913 to 1914 attended Gyula Illyés, a contemporary writer and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the gymnasium in Dombóvár.

In 1970, the castle became the property of the city.

Traffic

Dombóvár is the central station of (approx. 225 km long ) route Bataszek - Zákány, built as Danube Draubahn or Bataszek - Dombóvár - Zákányer train and their ( about 115 km long ) western section, Zákány - Dombóvár ( with the stations Zákány, Csurgó, Nagy, Alad, Szobb, Receipt, Jákó, Kiskorpád, Kaposvar, Baté, Dombóvár ), was handed over to public transport on 14 August 1872.   • The island forest ( Szigeterdő ) is a flower-filled city park with old oak trees.
