Dominick Browne, 4th Baron Oranmore and Browne

Dominick Geoffrey Edward Browne, 4th Baron Oranmore and Browne (* October 21, 1901; † 7 August 2002) was at the time of his death, the senior British peer and Member of Parliament.

Life

Browne was the eldest son of Geoffrey Henry Browne, 3rd Baron Oranmore and Browne and Lady Olwen Verena Ponsonby, daughter of Edward Ponsonby, 8th Earl of Bessborough. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, before he joined the Grenadier Guards.

In 1927 he succeeded his father, who was killed in a car accident in Southborough, Kent, on the seat in the House of Lords as Baron Mereworth in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. ( The older title of Baron Oranmore and Browne of the Peerage of Ireland was not connected to a seat in the House of Lords ) Lord Oranmore and Browne sat 72 years long in the upper house, longer than any other peer and he held during this long time never a parliamentary speech.

In 1930, the English residence of the family, Mereworth Castle, sold and Lord Oranmore and Browne moved to his Irish seat. On MacGarrett Castle in County Mayo, with an area of 12 km ² and 150 employees of the Lord had the opportunity to breed racehorses. Lord Oranmore and Browne was also an active pilot.

In the early 1950s, the castle was acquired by the Irish Land Commission and converted into a nursing home and from then on lived Lord Oranmore and Browne in London.

Browne was married three times:

  • First marriage in 1925, with Mildred Helen Egerton, daughter of the Hon Thomas Henry Frederick Egerton Earl of Ellesmere and Lady Bertha Anson of the Earls of Lichfield. The marriage was divorced in 1936, brought five children were born: Hon Patricia Helen Browne, ( born February 16, 1926)

  • Dominick Geoffrey Thomas Browne ( born July 1, 1929), now 5th Baron Oranmore and Browne
