Donald McIntyre

Sir Donald McIntyre ( born October 22, 1934 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a New Zealand opera singer (bass - baritone).

He took the profession of a primary school teacher, but decided to singing career. He received his first vocal training in New Zealand at Hubert Milverton - Carva in Auckland. After receiving a state scholarship, he continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music continued in London. In 1959, he debuted at the Welsh National Opera as Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco. In the following years he was a member of the Sadler's Wells Opera, where he sang roles including in Mozart and Verdi operas in English.

He achieved fame primarily for his interpretation of the great Wagnerian roles: Wotan / Wanderer, Hans Sachs, Dutch, Telramund, Kurvenal; in Parsifal, he sang over the years Klingsor, Amfortas and GURNEMANZ. His debut at Bayreuth in 1967 as he celebrated Telramund in Lohengrin. Here he was, inter alia, also from 1976 to 1980 in the legendary Boulez / Chereau Ring as Wotan / Wanderer heard. As Wotan he also guested at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Further stations of his career included the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, and the opera houses of Hamburg, Munich, Paris and Buenos Aires. The reopening of the Zurich Opera House 1984 he sang the role of Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger. Again and again he appeared in his native New Zealand in opera productions.

In 1992, he was raised by the British Queen Elizabeth II to the peerage.

He is still vocally active. He was heard around 2004 in Longborough as Wotan / Wanderer or in March 2006 in Wellington as GURNEMANZ.
