Double Six Crash

Double Six Tragedy ( German: Double Six Tragedy ), also known as Double Six Crash, called the plane crash on June 6, 1976 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The light coming from Labuan Sabah Air aircraft crashed during landing from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport in the suburb Sembulan. In the crash, all occupants of the aircraft were killed, including Tun Fuad Stephens, the then Chief Minister of Sabah. The Double Six name derives from the day and the month of the accident date and has impressed in Malaysia under this name in the collective memory.

Passengers

The aircraft transported politicians and members of the government of the State of Sabah. Besides the Prime Minister were as follows Personden on board:

  • Finance Minister Datuk Salleh Sulong,
  • Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Peter Mojuntin,
  • Minister of Communication and Works Chong Thien Vun,
  • Assistant minister Darius Binion,
  • Secretary of the Treasury of Sabah Datuk Wahid Peter Andau,
  • Director of the Department of Economic Planning Dr. Syed Hussein Wafa,
  • Isak Atan ( Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah from Privatsekreatär )
  • Corporal Said Mohammad ( bodyguard of Tun Fuad Stephens ),
  • Captain Gandhi Nathan ( the pilot ) and
  • Johari Stephens, the eldest son of Tun Fuad Stephens.

Causes of the crash

In the plane it was an Australian Nomad. The accident happened on the return flight from Labuan, where the politicians had met with Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh the Malaysian and the Prime Minister of Sarawak, Rahmaa Yakop. The plane crashed at 15:50 clock on the landing approach from the old airport of Kota Kinabalu. The cause of the crash is unknown. Immediately after the accident, there was speculation of a crime due to the then political circumstances. The Australian government sent four investigators who should help in determining the cause. A mechanical failure has been ruled out, but preliminary investigations pointed to a possible overload as one of the factors for the crash. The real reason for the accident remained in the dark; the investigation files were declared to be classified.

The following day was the former Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah, Harris Salleh, sworn in as the sixth Prime Minister of Sabah.

Memorial

The location of the crash is with the Double Six Monument ( Tugu Mal. Peringatan Double Six ), a memorial in the form of a stone obelisk marks, which was built shortly after the accident. The memorial is located in the district Sembulan within the Grace Garden building complex in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah at Jalan Pantai Sembulan.
