Draconettidae

Draconetta Xenica

Dragons Dragonets ( Draconettidae ) are a family of small bass related fish that live in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific ( Japan to Hawaii) on the continental shelf and the summits of submarine mountains. The fish are bottom dwellers and relatively rare.

Features

Dragons Dragonets are, depending on the type, seven to twelve inches long. On each side of the head there are two nostrils. The gill opening is relatively large. In each case a straight, strong spine is located on two bones of the gill cover ( Operculare and Suboperculare ), none against on the Präoperculare. Posttemporale and basisphenoid (two bones of the skull ) are present. A Nasalknochen missing. The lateral line is well developed only on the head, on the fuselage rudimentary or lies in a depression. Two different Hypuralknochen connect the last vertebra and the caudal fin.
