Classification

As in the other parts of his Finland trilogy ( "Suomi - trilogia " ) Kaurismäki describes the life of the ' little man ', who gets into trouble: Lauri and Ilona do not have much money. Lauri has just bought a TV on installment, when she meets the unemployment. The film was made at a time when Finland after the collapse of the Eastern bloc 's major trading partners lost, stuck in a severe economic crisis and unemployment soared. Aki Kaurismäki: Someone has to tell but in which the mess people get stuck and how they still maintain their dignity. I myself come from a poor background and knows how the company jumps with these people. Why should I make a film about spoiled mama's boy, the only one problem nuisance: to find the right outfit to specify.

Dedication

The film is dedicated to the memory of the Finnish actor Matti Pellonpää that would have the male lead should take over. After his death in 1995, Aki Kaurismäki occupied the second lead role with Kari Väänänen. In addition to the dedication at the beginning of the film Pellonpää appears a second time: The image of the dead child of Ilona and Lauri on the living room shelf shows Matti as a child.

  • In Kaurismäki land of 1990 is raging capitalism, (...) makes the city 's most renowned restaurant branch of a fast-food chain, the solid head waitress for moonlighting washing dishes and the proud tram driver for unemployed alcoholics without a license. (...) The Chefmelancholiker of European auteur cinema, in turn, does his best to the downright screaming story to tell from injustice in silent as possible tones: He leaves in ascetic composed tableaux solitary figures wander from excessive areas of color and silent stare through shop window in warm interiors, can it as long as the Finnish winter, as rigid as the faces of the eternal loser, factual accompanied by cameraman Salminen settings, observational and relies at all subtle emotion rather to melancholy tango sounds than on clarifying dialogue or even expressive spectacle.
