Location and population
Druskininkai is situated in the historic landscape Dzukija, approximately 130 km south-west of the state capital Vilnius and 40 km north of Grodno (Russian Grodno, Belarus ) located at the Memel. The resort is famous for its scenic location surrounded by morainic hills in a forest landscape. The municipality has 24,755 inhabitants, of which alone in the city Druskininka 16 263 people live.
History
The town's name probably comes from the Lithuanian word " Druska ", which means salt. Druskininkai was appointed by Tsar Nicholas I to the city in 1837. In addition, the Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis spent his childhood in the city.
Not far from Druskininkai is the Grutas Park, a " museum" with statues and monuments of the Soviet period.
