Dry port

A dry port (English dry port or hinterland hub ) is a freight village or a marshalling yard (or a combination of both) in the inland with a powerful direct rail connection to a seaport. The dry port takes over tasks of a port and expand its capacity.

Motivation and concept

Many existing ports can not be expanded in terms of area, so it is advisable to outsource certain functions in the hinterland, such as customs clearance, warehousing, assembly of freight trains and transhipment onto trucks. Since all plants will be built "on the green meadow ", ie without the space limitations of a " historically grown " port, the workflows can be optimimiert. It is hoped that the concept of faster cargo handling, shorter waiting times for ships, lower fuel consumption and CO2 savings. A dry port can also operate several seaports.
