Dudley Digges (actor)

Dudley Digges ( born June 9, 1879 in Dublin, † October 24, 1947 in New York) was an Irish film and theater actor.

Life

Dudley Digges was a member of Dublin 's Abbey Players, before he emigrated in the 1900s in the United States. There followed a sustained until his death, very successful career on Broadway, where he participated in over 60 productions. He played among others in the U.S. premiere of Ferenc Molnar's Liliom piece in the year 1921. 1929 he turned to escape from Devil's Island his first film. In the following 17 years he played in 40 films usually a larger supporting roles. He was, among others, in Mutiny on the Bounty and The general died at dawn to see. In the first film adaptation of The Maltese Falcon in 1931, he played the role of Caspar Gutman, which was taken over The Maltese Falcon by Sydney Greenstreet in John Huston.

He was married to his death with Mary Roden Quinn and died in 1947 of a heart attack.
