Dumbrăveni

Dumbrăveni ( German Elizabeth City, Hungarian Erzsébetváros, Latin Elisabethopolis; earlier Ibaşfalău Romanian, German Eppeschdorf, Hungarian Ebesfalva ) is a city in Transylvania ( Romania). It is located in the northern part of the district of Sibiu at the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ), about halfway between Sighisoara ( Sighisoara ) and Medias ( Medias ).

Together with Gherla ( Armenian city) Dumbrăveni belongs to historically significant Armenian cities in Transylvania.

History

The town was founded in the 13th century by German -born settlers, nowadays called Transylvanian Saxons. In the 14th century the settlement was known as Eppeschdorf. In the following times, the village was inhabited by Romanians and Hungarians. In the 15th century there was down the Hungarian aristocratic family Apafi and was built in 1552 a castle in the Renaissance style. In 1661, Michael I. Apafi Prince of Transylvania. Thus, the former Eppeschdorf was temporary princely residence.

Important for the city's history was during the years 1671 to 1685 ( under Michael Apafi ) the settlement of displaced Armenians from Moldavia. As merchants, they received numerous privileges. They finally acquired the castle and also inhabited the surrounding villages, for example Halvelagen ( Hoghilag ) Ehrgang ( Ernea ) and damage Rosch ( Saros pe Târnave ).

In the 18th century Eppeschdorf was renamed Elizabeth City and received the rank of a privileged city. Gradually, the Armenians took to the Hungarian language and culture. In 1850, the city had a total of 2,224 citizens. At this time, still 689 citizens called the Armenian origin. In 1930, at almost twice the population is still only 32 Citizens identified as Armenians.

Since the end of the First World War, the city belongs to Romania. ACCORDING to the census of 2002 there were 8,419 inhabitants in Dumbrăveni, which were 72.9 % Romanians, 13.8% Roma, 11.7% Hungarians and 1.5% Saxons .. The great Armenian Catholic Baroque church, the castle and many other buildings from that era still dominate the image of downtown.

Policy

The local council of the city consists of 15 members. After the election of 2012 seven parties are represented: USL ( 5 seats ), PP -DD and PD -L ( 3 seats each ), UDMR Partidul Verde ( Green Party ), Partida Romilor Pro Europa (Party of the Roma) and UNPR ( per 1 seat).

Infrastructure

South of Dumbrăveni leads the national road DN14 of Sighisoara ( Sighisoara ) to Sibiu (Hermannstadt) past the town. With the completion of the Transylvania motorway A3 to create a motorway connection. The train station is also located outside the south of the city and lies on the major mainline Teiuş - Braşov, where almost all regional trains in Dumbrăveni hold.

Personalities

Michael I. Apafi (1632-1690), prince of Transylvania, lived for a time in Elizabeth City.
