Dupnitsa

Dupniza [ dupnitsɐ ] (also written Dupnitsa, Bulgarian Дупница ) is a town in western Bulgaria, at the northwestern foothills of the Rila mountain, 60 km south of Sofia. Dupniza after Kyustendil the second largest city in the Oblast Kyustendil. The city is the administrative center of the municipality Dupniza.

Through the town, the rivers flow Bistriza, Dscherman, Dschubrena and Otowiza.

History

The city already existed in antiquity. Previously it was known under the name Tobiniza, Doupla and Darbiniza. It has its current name since the liberation from Ottoman rule 1878. 1948 to March 1992 the city was named Stanke Dimitrov ( Станке Димитров ) after the eponymous anti-fascists, who lived from 1889 to 1944. Between 1949 and 1950 the city was named after the battle name Dimitrov Marek.

Near the town is the area Rasmetaniza ( Разметаница ), where legend has killed his brother Aaron after Tsar Samuil. After liberation from the Ottomans was the Dupniza borderland region and the border crossing to the Ottoman Empire.

Since the end of the state-socialist era in Bulgaria organized crime was able to establish Plamen Galew ( Пламен Галев ) and Angel Hristov in Dupniza under the leadership of well-known as Galevi brothers former police officer. The Galevi brothers competed in 2009 for a seat in the Bulgarian Parliament, they ending a six -month prison sentence, inter alia, were serving on suspicion of extortion.

Early December 2010 flooded the rivers Bistrica and Dscherman wide part of the city.

Attractions

In the city there is a mosque, which was built during the Ottoman period on the foundations of a church. She is one of the oldest mosques in Bulgaria and is now the " Haus der Kunst " in Dupniza. After the end of Ottoman rule, the minaret was destroyed by the Bulgarians, who belonged to 99 % of the Orthodox Church.

An important part of the religious heritage of the region is the Dupniza Rila Monastery, whose main entrance bears the name Dupniza - gate.

In the city there are three Orthodox churches:

  • Sveti Georgi Pobedonosez ( Свети Георги Победоносец )
  • Sveti Nikola ( Свети Никола )
  • Pokrovsky BOGORODICHEN ( Покров Богородичен ).

Above the town is the chapel of Sveti Spas ( Bulg Свети Спас ).

Sports

In Dupniza the volleyball club Marek Union - IVKONI Dupniza is native who plays in the first Bulgarian Volleyballiga. The local football club is called Marek Dupniza.
