Earl Ferrers

Earl Ferrers is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Great Britain. It is named after a family of Anglo -Norman feudal lords and is now worn by the family Shirley. The title is the first because oldest earldom of peerage in the log Aryan hierarchy.

Ancestral home of the family is Ditchingham Hall at Ditchingham in the south of Norfolk.

Award

The title was awarded to Sir Robert Shirley, 7 baronet in 1711. This was Master of the Horse, and Lord Steward for Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II Later he was Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Earl Ferrers is one of a Viscount Tamworth, of Tamworth in the County of Staffordshire ( created 1711). This title also belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain.

The respective heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Tamworth.

Another title

The first Earl had in 1677 received the title of Baron Ferrers of Chartley, who since the death of Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, 12th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, rested. However, this title could also be inherited in the female line, and therefore went at his death to the daughter of his predeceased eldest son, while the other titles have all occurred to the eldest surviving son.

Next, the respective Earl leads the title of Baronet, of Staunton Harold in the County of Leicestershire, in the Baronetage of England, which was in 1611 awarded to a direct ancestor of the first Earl.
