Earl of Dalhousie

Earl of Dalhousie, in the County of Midlothian, is a British hereditary title of nobility, which was awarded in the Peerage of Scotland. He is supported by the head of the Ramsey family. The title is named after the former ancestral home of the family.

The respective Earl is Chief of the Clan Ramsay.

Ancestral home of the family is Brechin Castle. The former headquarters Dalhousie Castle was sold in 2003, after he had been rebuilt already in the 1970s to the hotel and rented many years.

Award

The title was for William Ramsay, 2nd Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie, created in 1633. This had previously been a member of the Scottish Parliament and Sheriff Principal of Edinburghshire several years.

Subordinate title

The father of the first Earl, also a Scottish politician who had been raised in 1618 to Lord Ramsay of Melrose. He later received the power to change the title in Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie, without the title is newly awarded.

Simultaneously with the earldom of the title Lord Ramsay of Keringtoun was awarded. Both of the aforementioned Would also belong to the peerage of Scotland.

The twelfth Earl was an admiral in the Royal Navy. It was built in 1875 for Baron Ramsay, of Glenmark in the County of Forfar, levied. This title belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the respective Earl received an automatic seat in the House of Lords.

The heir takes the courtesy title of Lord Ramsay.

The ninth Earl, a major military of his time, was in 1815 created Baron Dalhousie of Dalhousie Castle in the County of Edinburgh, where, in order to give him a permanent seat in the House of Lords.

His son, the tenth Earl, was Governor-General of India. It was 1849 in the County of Edinburgh and of the Punjab, where the Marquess of Dalhousie, of Dalhousie Castle. Both titles were in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, extinguished, when the Marquess died in 1860 without leaving a son.

The eleventh Earl had in 1852 from his father in 1831 created for this item Baron Panmure of Brechin and Navar in the County of Forfar, inherited. This was extinguished when he died in 1874 without a male descendant.
