George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie

George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie, CB (* April 26, 1806; † July 20, 1880 at Dalhousie Castle) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier.

Family, titles and military career

Ramsay was born on April 26, 1806, the son of John Ramsay and its coming from Calcutta Mrs. Mary Delise. He had six siblings, five brothers and one sister. On August 12, 1845, he married Sarah Frances Robertson with whom he had four sons.

In 1856 he was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath, and in 1857 took over the post of commander of Pembroke Dockyard. 1862 Ramsay was promoted to Rear Admiral. Between 1866 and 1869 he headed the South America station is an important part of the British Navy where he acquired the rank of vice-admiral. When his cousin Fox Maule Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie, died childless on July 6, 1874 was the Scottish title Earl of Dalhousie. On June 12, 1875 given the title Baron Ramsay, of Glenmark was Queen Victoria also in the County of Forfar, awarded. By the latter title that belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, he received an automatic seat in the House of Lords. In the same year he retired. With his death, his titles went over to his eldest son John William.
