Earl of Elgin

The title Earl of Elgin is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the family, Bruce.

History

On June 21, 1633 was the title of Thomas Bruce, 3rd Lord Kinloss, created. His son Robert followed him and received the title of Earl of Ailesbury in the Peerage of England. The two earldom was passed down to the death of the 4th Earl of Elgin united. This extinguished the Ailesbury and Bruce title and the " Earl of Elgin " came into the possession of the Earl of Kincardine; the title of Lord Kinloss was dormant. Since then, the earldoms of Elgin and Kincardine will be awarded together. The most famous Graf was Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin. He went as art thieves in history, famous for its spectacular coup in Athens, when he stole the Elgin Marbles named after him from the Parthenon. In Dublin there are some streets that are named after the Earl, eg Elgin Road and Ailesbury Road.

In addition to the titles Earl of Elgin and Earl of Kincardine, the Lord Elgin also holds the title of Lord Bruce of Kinloss ( created 1608), Lord Bruce of Torry ( 1647) and Baron Elgin of Elgin in Scotland ( 1849). The first two are in the Peerage of Scotland, the third party in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The Earl of Elgin is also the hereditary Clan Chief of Clan Bruce.

The family seat is Broomhall House, which is about three miles south west of Dunfermline.
