Andrew Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin

Andrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin and 15th Earl of Kincardine, KT, CD, DL, JP ( born February 17, 1924) is a Scottish peer. Since 1968 is his title " Lord Bruce ".

Family and Education

Andrew Bruce is the eldest son of Edward Bruce, 10th Earl of Elgin, and Katherine Elizabeth Cochrane, daughter of Thomas Cochrane, 1st Baron Cochrane of Cults. He is a descendant of Robert the Bruce, and Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, who brought the Elgin Marbles to London in the early 19th century. He studied at Eton and at Balliol College, Oxford. He then served as a lieutenant in the Scots Guards. During the Second World War, he was wounded in August 1944 during Operation Overlord in Normandy and then sat some time in a wheelchair. Since 1970 Bruce Honorary Colonel of the Canadian 31 Combat Engineer Regiment, "The Elgin " is called, from 1976 till 1986, he had this rank at 153 ( Highland ) Transport Regiment held.

The Earl inherited his title after the death of his father in 1968.

Career and Offices

Bruce held a number of business items. He was, among other things, 1975-1994 President of the Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Society and Chairman of the National Savings Committee for Scotland.

1951 Bruce was appointed Justice of the Peace, was from 1955 to 1987 and Deputy Lieutenant from 1987 to 1999 Lord Lieutenant of Fife. In 1980 he was of Queen Elizabeth II to the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland appointed and 1981 again. In 1982 he was elevated to Knight of the Thistle. He was from 1952 to 1965 County Cadet Commandant of Fife, 1966-1985 President of the Brigade Boys' Brigade and 1961-1965 Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. He is an honorary citizen of Bridgetown, Regina, Port Elgin, Winnipeg, St. Thomas, and Moose Jaw.

Lord Elgin was President of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club and is Honorary President of the Broomhall Curling Club. 1982 was the skip of the Scottish curling team that defeated a top choice of Canadian teams in several games. The connection of his family to Canada dates from the 19th century, since his ancestor, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, Governor General of Canada was.
