Earl of Longford

Earl of Longford is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Ireland, named after the town of Longford in Ireland, which is now worn by the family Packenham.

Seat of the family in Ireland is Tullynally Castle in County Westmeath in Ireland.

Ceremonies

The title was first awarded to Francis Aungier, 3rd Baron Aungier of Longford in 1677. However, after his brother died in 1706 without male issue, the title became extinct again.

Her niece Elizabeth Cuffier married Thomas Packenham, who was ennobled in 1756 as Baron Longford. 1785 Elizabeth was, her husband had died in the meantime, raised to the Countess of Longford in its own right.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Earl of Longford are Baron Longford, in the County of Longford ( created 1756 ), Baron Silchester of Silchester in the County of Southampton ( created 1821) and Baron Pakenham, of Cowley in the City of Oxford ( created 1945). The latter title was in 1945 awarded to the younger brother of the sixth Earl, who inherited the earldom of this later.

While the earldom and the barony of Longford the Peerage of Ireland are assigned, include the other two baronies in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The heir apparent has the title Baron Silchester as a courtesy title.
