Earl of Northumberland

Earl of Northumberland is a hereditary British title of nobility, which was awarded several times in the Peerage of England and most recently in the Peerage of Great Britain. He is now operated by the family of Percy as a subordinate title to the dignity of Duke of Northumberland. It is named after the title of the county of Northumberland in England.

Ceremonies

1377 was Henry Percy, Baron Percy of Alnwick, was appointed Earl of Northumberland by King Richard II after his coronation. His son was the famous Henry Hotspur, who fell during the lifetime of his father at the battle of Shrewsbury. As father and son had rebelled against King Henry IV, the title was revoked in 1405. King Henry V annulled the forfeiture in 1416 again.

The male line of descendants Joscelin de Louvains became extinct in 1670 with Josceline de Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland. His daughter Elizabeth married in 1682 Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, her granddaughter finally a knight from Yorkshire, Hugh Smithson, who was appointed in 1766 for the first Duke of Northumberland. One of Hugh Smithson's illegitimate sons was James Smithson, whose bequest who founded the Smithsonian Institution.
