Duke of Northumberland

Duke of Northumberland is a British peerage, which was awarded once in the Peerage of England and twice in the Peerage of Great Britain and is run by the family of Percy.

The family seat of the Dukes is Alnwick Castle in Alnwick, Northumberland; their London residence is Syon House in Brentford.

Ceremonies

The Ealdormans of Northumbria were called Dux when they were vassals of Anglo-Saxon kings of Wessex. The lords of Bamburgh, Osulf († 963 ) and his son Waltheof I, were in this sense Dukes of Northumbria. Soon after the Norman Conquest of England, the great Earldom was divided, the descendants of the Dukes kept the earldoms of Huntingdon and Northampton.

The title Duke of Northumberland was the first time in 1551 for John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, created. The name of the title was created as a historical allusion, as he and his family saw themselves as the heirs of Bamburgh dynasty as descendants of a daughter of Simon II de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon - Northampton, which in turn was a descendant Waltheofs.

Dudley tried to support the claim of his daughter Lady Jane Grey on the English throne. When she was deposed by Queen Mary, Dudley was accused of treason and executed. An illegitimate son of his surviving heirs, Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, claimed the title at the beginning of the 17th century for himself and bore the title in exile. George Fitzroy, not a legitimate son of King Charles II received the title in 1674, but remained without heirs.

A third award was then in 1766 for the family Percy, already the title of Earl of Northumberland bore, and leading the dignity today. The Dukes of Northumberland have their family tomb in Westminster Abbey in London, where she will continue to be buried.
