House of Percy

Percy ( also Perci originally ) was over much of the Middle Ages, the most powerful family in northern England. The title of Baron Percy William de Percy was already in 1066, the year of the Norman conquest of England. The name refers to the ancestral home of the Percy in Normandy, the municipality of Percy -en-Auge. Members of the family bear the title of Earl of Northumberland or Duke of Northumberland today. Similar to their rivals, the House Neville, the name Percy was also disclosed when inherited through the female line.

History

The Percy descended from a Danish robber baron called Main Fred, who had settled in the 9th century north-west of the Pays de Caux, Rouen. His descendants were awarded after their relocation to England in 1066 some estates in Yorkshire. At the time of King Henry I. She was represented by Agnes de Percy, the daughter and heiress of William de Percy and Adelaide de Clare, whose wealth brought the second wife of the king, Adelheid of Louvain, to her with her illegitimate half-brother Joscelin, called frater to marry reginae ( Queen's Brother ), (see also: Master list of Reginare ). The third Henry Percy bought Alnwick Castle in 1309, which became the headquarters of the family, and was rebuilt by the fourth Henry Percy, as we know it today. The two Henrys are better known as Henry Percy, 1st and 2nd Baron Percy of Alnwick.

1377 the next Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland was appointed by King Richard II after his coronation. His son was the famous Henry Hotspur, who fell during the lifetime of his father at the battle of Shrewsbury. As father and son had rebelled against King Henry IV, the title was revoked in 1405. King Henry V annulled the forfeiture in 1416 again.

The male line of descendants Joscelin de Louvains became extinct in 1670 with Josceline de Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland. His daughter Elizabeth married in 1682 Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, her granddaughter finally a knight from Yorkshire, Hugh Smithson, who was raised in 1766 for the first Duke of Northumberland.
